About Taekwondo
Taekwondo is the world's most practiced martial art, and is both a system of self-defence and an Olympic sport.
Taekwondo, which is a national martial art of Korea, is one of the proudest cultural heritages for the Korean people. Taekwondo has been developed into a modern sport as a result of painstaking researches and experiences by the Taekwondo practicioners through their incessant upgrading of technical and spiritual refinement. At the same time, it has been firmly established as a real national martial art enabling the people to defend the nation.
The origins of Taekwondo, the self-defence system, can be traced back to the combat techniques taught to Hwarang, the ledgendary warrior knights of the Silla dynasty of Korea. Taekwondo, the sport, has its roots in the ancient Korean game of Tae Kyon where players met at festivals to test their combat kicking skills in organised tournaments.
Today, millions of men, women and children of all ages and nationalities enjoy taekwondo all over the world. Training in Taekwondo (TKD) is enjoyable and challenging the benifits of regular training include increased fitness, flexibility, co-ordination, strength, confidence and self-defence capabilities.
The history of Taekwondo can be found at the Kukkiwon web site.
